Never a dull moment

Really an interesting pattern here today. The really interesting part of this forecast is whether we are actually able to tap into that southern stream system. As you can imagine cold air is dense and it likes to sink to the surface. We are still being dominated by the polar jet stream. So my big question today is does the southern jet stream ever make it here and does the polar or northern stream ever retreat. The answer is yes! The polar jet does retreat but it still looks like it is going to be a slow process, so it doesn't look like we are going to see the full extent of this system, which is probably a good thing. We will still see the rain but it probably won't be as heavy as what they are going to see to the south. Let's dive into a couple of examples here.

Here is the current surface map with much of the convection well to the south of our area early today. It's going to be really tough for that to move so far north this afternoon.
By tomorrow we are back in that dreaded northern flow with more cold air sitting over the area. You can see we are back to about -2c and that's the end of the day tomorrow.
I'm going to skip ahead to Sunday here and show you what looks to be a really interesting storm. I like the track of this system for some accumulating snow, and certainly the cold air is in place. So don't put away the coats yet.
The system does dump some pretty cold air behind it with -10 to -12 by Monday afternoon. Look out northeast, could be heavy snow for New England.
